The meeting with hundreds of journalists is the new pope’s first audience with people outside the Vatican. Meanwhile preparations for the new pope’s inauguration mass 24 April 2005 on the esplanade of Saint Peter’s basilica kicked into high gear. Authorities in Rome say they are expecting up to half a million people to come here for the 10:00 am (0800 GMT) ceremony as well as kings, presidents, prime ministers and other officials from around the world.
